I bow to the true spiritual master.

I bow to the destroyer of ignorance.

ॐ अदम्भिने नमः ॥ ३ ॥

oṃ adambhine namaḥ ॥ 3 ॥

I bow to the one devoid of deceit.

ॐ अद्वैतप्रकाशकाय नमः ॥ ४ ॥

oṃ advaitaprakāśakāya namaḥ ॥ 4 ॥

I bow to the radiant light of non-dualism.

ॐ अनपेक्षाय नमः ॥ ५ ॥

oṃ anapekṣāya namaḥ ॥ 5 ॥

I bow to the impartial one.

ॐ अनसूयवे नमः ॥ ६ ॥

oṃ anasūyave namaḥ ॥ 6 ॥

I bow to the one devoid of spite and envy.

ॐ अनुपमाय नमः ॥ ७ ॥

oṃ anupamāya namaḥ ॥ 7 ॥

I bow to the one without equal.

ॐ अभयप्रदाये नमः ॥ ८ ॥

oṃ abhayapradāye namaḥ ॥ 8 ॥

I bow to the bestower of fearlessness.

ॐ अमानिने नमः ॥ ९ ॥

oṃ amānine namaḥ ॥ 9 ॥

I bow to the one by whom greatness is measured.

ॐ अहिंसामूर्तये नमः ॥ १० ॥

oṃ ahiṃsāmūrtaye namaḥ ॥ 10 ॥

I bow to the embodiment of harmlessness.

ॐ अहैतुकदयासिन्धवे नमः ॥ ११ ॥

oṃ ahaitukadayāsindhave namaḥ ॥ 11 ॥

I bow to the causeless river of compassion.

ॐ अहंकारनाशकाय नमः ॥ १२ ॥

oṃ ahaṃkāranāśakāya namaḥ ॥ 12 ॥

I bow to destroyer of the ego.

ॐ अहंकारस्वर्जिताय नमः ॥ १३ ॥

oṃ ahaṃkārasvarjitāya namaḥ ॥ 13 ॥

I bow to the one who is without ego.

ॐ आचार्येन्द्राय नमः ॥ १४ ॥

oṃ ācāryendrāya namaḥ ॥ 14 ॥

I bow to the greatest of spiritual preceptors.

ॐ आत्मसन्दुष्टाय नमः ॥ १५ ॥

oṃ ātmasanduṣṭāya namaḥ ॥ 15 ॥

I bow to the one whose soul is incorruptable.

ॐ आनन्दमूर्तये नमः ॥ १६ ॥

oṃ ānandamūrtaye namaḥ ॥ 16 ॥

I bow to the embodiment of joy.

ॐ आर्जवयुक्ताय नमः ॥ १७ ॥

oṃ ārjavayuktāya namaḥ ॥ 17 ॥

I bow to the one who is always honest.

ॐ उचितवाचे नमः ॥ १८ ॥

oṃ ucitavāce namaḥ ॥ 18 ॥

I bow to the one whose speech is pleasant.

ॐ उत्साहिने नमः ॥ १९ ॥

oṃ utsāhine namaḥ ॥ 19 ॥

I bow to the one who perseveres.

ॐ उदासीनाय नमः ॥ २० ॥

oṃ udāsīnāya namaḥ ॥ 20 ॥

I bow to the one who is unaffected.

ॐ उपरताय नमः ॥ २१ ॥

oṃ uparatāya namaḥ ॥ 21 ॥

I bow to the one who retired from the affairs of the world.

ॐ ऐश्वर्ययुक्ताय नमः ॥ २२ ॥

oṃ aiśvaryayuktāya namaḥ ॥ 22 ॥

I bow to the one endowed with majesty.

ॐ कृतकृत्याय नमः ॥ २३ ॥

oṃ kṛtakṛtyāya namaḥ ॥ 23 ॥

I bow to the one who always does what is right.

ॐ क्षमावते नमः ॥ २४ ॥

oṃ kṣamāvate namaḥ ॥ 24 ॥

I bow to the most patient one.

ॐ गुणातीताय नमः ॥ २५ ॥

oṃ guṇātītāya namaḥ ॥ 25 ॥

I bow to the one who is beyond the three guṇas1.

ॐ चारुवाग्विलासाय नमः ॥ २६ ॥

oṃ cāruvāgvilāsāya namaḥ ॥ 26 ॥

I bow to the one whose speech is pleasant and playful.

ॐ चारुहासाय नमः ॥ २७ ॥

oṃ cāruhāsāya namaḥ ॥ 27 ॥

I bow to the one whose laughter is sweet.

ॐ छिन्नसंशयाय नमः ॥ २८ ॥

oṃ chinnasaṃśayāya namaḥ ॥ 28 ॥

I bow to the remover of doubt.

ॐ ज्ञानदात्रे नमः ॥ २९ ॥

oṃ jñānadātre namaḥ ॥ 29 ॥

I bow to the bestower of wisdom.

ॐ ज्ञानयज्ञतत्पराय नमः ॥ ३० ॥

oṃ jñānayajñatatparāya namaḥ ॥ 30 ॥

I bow to the one who is devoted to the knowledge of worship.

ॐ तत्त्वदर्शिने नमः ॥ ३१ ॥

oṃ tattvadarśine namaḥ ॥ 31 ॥

I bow to the one who sees the essence of all things.

ॐ तपस्विने नमः ॥ ३२ ॥

oṃ tapasvine namaḥ ॥ 32 ॥

I bow to the one who practices austerities.

ॐ तापहराय नमः ॥ ३३ ॥

oṃ tāpaharāya namaḥ ॥ 33 ॥

I bow to the remover of suffering.

ॐ तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतये नमः ॥ ३४ ॥

oṃ tulyanindāstutaye namaḥ ॥ 34 ॥

I bow to the one for whom blame and praise are equal.

ॐ तुल्यप्रियाप्रियाय नमः ॥ ३५ ॥

oṃ tulyapriyāpriyāya namaḥ ॥ 35 ॥

I bow to the one who loves all equally.

ॐ तुल्यमानापमानाय नमः ॥ ३६ ॥

oṃ tulyamānāpamānāya namaḥ ॥ 36 ॥

I bow to the one for whom esteem and contempt are equal.

ॐ तेजस्विने नमः ॥ ३७ ॥

oṃ tejasvine namaḥ ॥ 37 ॥

I bow to the radiant one.

ॐ त्यक्तसर्वपरिग्रहाय नमः ॥ ३८ ॥

oṃ tyaktasarvaparigrahāya namaḥ ॥ 38 ॥

I bow to the one who abandoned all the duties of a householder.

ॐ त्यागिने नमः ॥ ३९ ॥

oṃ tyāgine namaḥ ॥ 39 ॥

I bow to the one who renounces.

ॐ दक्षाय नमः ॥ ४० ॥

oṃ dakṣāya namaḥ ॥ 40 ॥

I bow to the one who is highly intelligent.

ॐ दान्ताय नमः ॥ ४१ ॥

oṃ dāntāya namaḥ ॥ 41 ॥

I bow to the one who has tamed their passions.

ॐ दृढव्रताय नमः ॥ ४२ ॥

oṃ dṛḍhavratāya namaḥ ॥ 42 ॥

I bow to the one with very firm resolve.

ॐ दोषवर्जिताय नमः ॥ ४३ ॥

oṃ doṣavarjitāya namaḥ ॥ 43 ॥

I bow to the one who has abandoned sinfulness.

ॐ द्वंद्वातीताय नमः ॥ ४४ ॥

oṃ dvaṃdvātītāya namaḥ ॥ 44 ॥

I bow to the one who is beyond duality.

ॐ धीमते नमः ॥ ४५ ॥

oṃ dhīmate namaḥ ॥ 45 ॥

I bow to the scholarly one.

ॐ धीराय नमः ॥ ४६ ॥

oṃ dhīrāya namaḥ ॥ 46 ॥

I bow to the one of strong character.

ॐ नित्यसन्तुष्टाय नमः ॥ ४७ ॥

oṃ nityasantuṣṭāya namaḥ ॥ 47 ॥

I bow to the one who is eternally satisfied.

ॐ निरहंकाराय नमः ॥ ४८ ॥

oṃ nirahaṃkārāya namaḥ ॥ 48 ॥

I bow to one the who is without ego.

ॐ निराश्रयाय नमः ॥ ४९ ॥

oṃ nirāśrayāya namaḥ ॥ 49 ॥

I bow to the one who depends on none.

ॐ निर्भयाय नमः ॥ ५० ॥

oṃ nirbhayāya namaḥ ॥ 50 ॥

I bow to the fearless one.

ॐ निर्मदाय नमः ॥ ५१ ॥

oṃ nirmadāya namaḥ ॥ 51 ॥

I bow to the humble one.

I bow to the one who is detached from the world.

I bow to the pure one.

I bow to the one who is free from illusion.

ॐ निर्योगक्षेमाय नमः ॥ ५५ ॥

oṃ niryogakṣemāya namaḥ ॥ 55 ॥

I bow to the one who owns no property.

ॐ निर्लोभाय नमः ॥ ५६ ॥

oṃ nirlobhāya namaḥ ॥ 56 ॥

I bow to the one who is free from desire.

ॐ निष्कामाय नमः ॥ ५७ ॥

oṃ niṣkāmāya namaḥ ॥ 57 ॥

I bow to the one who is unselfish.

ॐ निष्क्रोधाय नमः ॥ ५८ ॥

oṃ niṣkrodhāya namaḥ ॥ 58 ॥

I bow to the one who is free from wrath.

ॐ निःसङ्गाय नमः ॥ ५९ ॥

oṃ niḥsaṅgāya namaḥ ॥ 59 ॥

I bow to the one who is free from attachments.

ॐ परमसुखदाय नमः ॥ ६० ॥

oṃ paramasukhadāya namaḥ ॥ 60 ॥

I bow to the giver of supreme delight.

ॐ पण्डिताय नमः ॥ ६१ ॥

oṃ paṇḍitāya namaḥ ॥ 61 ॥

I bow to the learned philosopher.

ॐ पूर्णाय नमः ॥ ६२ ॥

oṃ pūrṇāya namaḥ ॥ 62 ॥

I bow to the one who is whole and perfect.

ॐ प्रमाणप्रवर्तकाय नमः ॥ ६३ ॥

oṃ pramāṇapravartakāya namaḥ ॥ 63 ॥

I bow to the one who sets the pramāṇāni in action.

ॐ प्रियभाषिणे नमः ॥ ६४ ॥

oṃ priyabhāṣiṇe namaḥ ॥ 64 ॥

I bow to the beloved speaker.

ॐ ब्रह्मकर्मसमाधये नमः ॥ ६५ ॥

oṃ brahmakarmasamādhaye namaḥ ॥ 65 ॥

I bow to the realizer that everything is the work of the Supreme Absolute.

ॐ ब्रह्मात्मनिष्ठाय नमः ॥ ६६ ॥

oṃ brahmātmaniṣṭhāya namaḥ ॥ 66 ॥

I bow to the one whose soul is grounded in the Supreme Absolute.

ॐ ब्रह्मात्मविदे नमः ॥ ६७ ॥

oṃ brahmātmavide namaḥ ॥ 67 ॥

I bow to the one whose soul knows the Supreme Absolute.

ॐ भक्ताय नमः ॥ ६८ ॥

oṃ bhaktāya namaḥ ॥ 68 ॥

I bow to the faithful devotee.

ॐ भवरोगहराय नमः ॥ ६९ ॥

oṃ bhavarogaharāya namaḥ ॥ 69 ॥

I bow to the remover of the causes of disease.

ॐ भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदात्रे नमः ॥ ७० ॥

oṃ bhuktimuktipradātre namaḥ ॥ 70 ॥

I bow to the bestower of liberation from attachment to worldly pleasures.

ॐ मंगलकर्त्रे नमः ॥ ७१ ॥

oṃ maṃgalakartre namaḥ ॥ 71 ॥

I bow to the one whose actions are auspicious.

ॐ मधुराभाषिणे नमः ॥ ७२ ॥

oṃ madhurābhāṣiṇe namaḥ ॥ 72 ॥

I bow to the one whose speech is sweet.

ॐ महात्मने नमः ॥ ७३ ॥

oṃ mahātmane namaḥ ॥ 73 ॥

I bow to the one who is noble and exceedingly wise (literally, “great soul”).

ॐ महावाक्योपदेशकर्त्रे नमः ॥ ७४ ॥

oṃ mahāvākyopadeśakartre namaḥ ॥ 74 ॥

I bow to the one who teaches the mahāvākyāni2.

ॐ मितभाषिणे नमः ॥ ७५ ॥

oṃ mitabhāṣiṇe namaḥ ॥ 75 ॥

I bow to the one who carefully measures his speech.

ॐ मुक्ताय नमः ॥ ७६ ॥

oṃ muktāya namaḥ ॥ 76 ॥

I bow to the liberated one.

ॐ मौनिने नमः ॥ ७७ ॥

oṃ maunine namaḥ ॥ 77 ॥

I bow to the silent one.

ॐ यतचित्ताय नमः ॥ ७८ ॥

oṃ yatacittāya namaḥ ॥ 78 ॥

I bow to the subduer of the conscious mind.

ॐ यतये नमः ॥ ७९ ॥

oṃ yataye namaḥ ॥ 79 ॥

I bow to the one who has abandoned the material world to strive for spiritual perfection.

ॐ यदृच्छालाभसंतुष्टाय नमः ॥ ८० ॥

oṃ yadṛcchālābhasaṃtuṣṭāya namaḥ ॥ 80 ॥

I bow to the one who is content with whatever happens to come their way.

ॐ युक्ताय नमः ॥ ८१ ॥

oṃ yuktāya namaḥ ॥ 81 ॥

I bow to the one who has achieved union (is absorbed in deep meditation, i.e. samādhi).

ॐ रागद्वेषवर्जिताय नमः ॥ ८२ ॥

oṃ rāgadveṣavarjitāya namaḥ ॥ 82 ॥

I bow to the one devoid of the passions of both love and hatred.

ॐ विदिताखिलशास्त्राय नमः ॥ ८३ ॥

oṃ viditākhilaśāstrāya namaḥ ॥ 83 ॥

I bow to the one who understands all teachings in their entirety.

ॐ विद्याविनयसम्पन्नाय नमः ॥ ८४ ॥

oṃ vidyāvinayasampannāya namaḥ ॥ 84 ॥

I bow to the one endowed with knowledge and discipline.

ॐ विमत्सराय नमः ॥ ८५ ॥

oṃ vimatsarāya namaḥ ॥ 85 ॥

I bow to the one free from envy and jealousy.

ॐ विवेकिने नमः ॥ ८६ ॥

oṃ vivekine namaḥ ॥ 86 ॥

I bow to the discerning one.

ॐ विशालहृदयाय नमः ॥ ८७ ॥

oṃ viśālahṛdayāya namaḥ ॥ 87 ॥

I bow to the one with a boundless heart.

ॐ व्यवसायिने नमः ॥ ८८ ॥

oṃ vyavasāyine namaḥ ॥ 88 ॥

I bow to the one with determined resolve.

ॐ शरणागतवत्सलाय नमः ॥ ८९ ॥

oṃ śaraṇāgatavatsalāya namaḥ ॥ 89 ॥

I bow to the one who tends to those seeking refuge.

ॐ शान्ताय नमः ॥ ९० ॥

I bow to the peaceful one.

ॐ शुद्धमानसाय नमः ॥ ९१ ॥

oṃ śuddhamānasāya namaḥ ॥ 91 ॥

I bow to the one whose mind is pure.

ॐ शिष्यप्रियाय नमः ॥ ९२ ॥

I bow to the one who is devoted to their disciples.

ॐ श्रद्धावते नमः ॥ ९३ ॥

I bow to the faithful one.

ॐ श्रोत्रियाय नमः ॥ ९४ ॥

oṃ śrotriyāya namaḥ ॥ 94 ॥

I bow to the one learned in the scriptures.

ॐ सत्यवाचे नमः ॥ ९५ ॥

oṃ satyavāce namaḥ ॥ 95 ॥

I bow to the one who speaks truth.

ॐ सदामुदितवदनाय नमः ॥ ९६ ॥

I bow to the one whose speech is always joyful.

ॐ समचित्ताय नमः ॥ ९७ ॥

oṃ samacittāya namaḥ ॥ 97 ॥

I bow to the one whose mind is equanimous.

ॐ समाधिकस्वर्जिताय नमः ॥ ९८ ॥

oṃ samādhikasvarjitāya namaḥ ॥ 98 ॥

I bow to the one who can bestow samādhi.

ॐ समाहितचित्ताय नमः ॥ ९९ ॥

oṃ samāhitacittāya namaḥ ॥ 99 ॥

I bow to the one whose consciousness is absorbed in meditation.

ॐ सर्वभूतहिताय नमः ॥ १०० ॥

oṃ sarvabhūtahitāya namaḥ ॥ 100 ॥

I bow to the one who is a friend to all beings.

ॐ सिद्धाय नमः ॥ १०१ ॥

oṃ siddhāya namaḥ ॥ 101 ॥

I bow to the perfected master3.

ॐ सुलभाय नमः ॥ १०२ ॥

oṃ sulabhāya namaḥ ॥ 102 ॥

I bow to the one who is easily obtained.

ॐ सुशीलाय नमः ॥ १०३ ॥

oṃ suśīlāya namaḥ ॥ 103 ॥

I bow to the amiable one.

ॐ सुहृदे नमः ॥ १०४ ॥

oṃ suhṛde namaḥ ॥ 104 ॥

I bow to the kindhearted one.

ॐ सूक्ष्मबुद्धये नमः ॥ १०५ ॥

oṃ sūkṣmabuddhaye namaḥ ॥ 105 ॥

I bow to the one whose mind is in a spiritual state.

ॐ संकल्पवर्जिताय नमः ॥ १०६ ॥

oṃ saṃkalpavarjitāya namaḥ ॥ 106 ॥

I bow to the one who is devoid of motive.

ॐ सम्प्रदायविदे नमः ॥ १०७ ॥

oṃ sampradāyavide namaḥ ॥ 107 ॥

I bow to the holder of the knowledge of the lineage4.

ॐ स्वतन्त्राय नमः ॥ १०८ ॥

oṃ svatantrāya namaḥ ॥ 108 ॥

I bow to the one who is subject only to their own will5.

  1. The word guṇa means “quality”, “aspect”, or “tendency”. The three guṇas referenced here are part of the sāṃkhya school of Hindu philosophy (though they were later widely adopted by most other schools, especially vedānta). They are: sattva (purity, balance, goodness), rajas (activity, passion, neither goodness nor badness), and tamas (impurity, chaos, badness). It is a general principle that associating with activities, materials, or individuals that are predominantly sattvik can facilitate spiritual growth, while associating with predominantly tamasik ones can be a spiritual hindrance.

  2. The mahāvākyāni (“great utterances”) summarize the whole of Upanishadic philosophy in the form of four aphorisms: tattvamasi (“Thou art That”), ahambrahmāsmi (“I am brahman”), prajñānambrahma (“brahman is pure consciousness”), and ayamātmābrahma (“My higher Self is one with brahman”).

  3. A siddha is a spiritually perfected being. They are endowed with eight spiritual powers (aṣṭasiddhi): aṇiman (able to become as small as an atom), mahiman (able to become as large as the whole universe), gariman (able to become infinitely heavy), laghiman (able to become weightless), prāpti (able to obtain anything at will), prākāmya (able to assume any form), īśitva (power over life and death), and vaśitva (able to impose one’s will on any living being).

  4. A sampradāya is a particular spiritual lineage, tradition, or philosophical school. It takes the form of an unbroken succession of spiritual masters that preserve and pass on the teachings of the sampradāya to initiated disciples.

  5. The word sva means “self”, and tantra means “depending on”. The combined phrase svatantra could be translated as “self-sufficient”, but its real meaning goes beyond that. It is not merely freedom from dependence on others, but also freedom from the influence of others.
