भव सागर तारण कारण हे
रवि नन्दन भन्धन खण्डन हे
शरणागत किङ्कर भीतमने
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ १ ॥

bhava sāgara tāraṇa kāraṇa he
ravi nandana bhandhana khaṇḍana he
śaraṇāgata kiṅkara bhītamane
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 1 ॥

You show the way to cross over the ocean of existence, cutting us loose from the bondage of the son of Ravi, the god of the sun1. You grant refuge to your servants, whose minds are full of fear. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

हृदि कन्दर तामस भास्कर हे
तूमि विष्णु प्रजापति शङ्कर हे
परब्रह्म परात् पर वेद भणे
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ २ ॥

hṛdi kandara tāmasa bhāskara he
tūmi viṣṇu prajāpati śaṅkara he
parabrahma parāt para veda bhaṇe
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 2 ॥

You are the sun that destroys the darkness in the cave of the heart. You are viṣṇu, prajāpati (brahmā), and śaṅkara (śiva). The Vedas describe you as parabrahman, the highest of the high. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

मन वारण शासन अङ्कुश हे
नर त्राण तरे हरि चाक्षुष हे
गुण गान परायण देव गणे
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ ३ ॥

mana vāraṇa śāsana aṅkuśa he
nara trāṇa tare hari cākṣuṣa he
guṇa gāna parāyaṇa deva gaṇe
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 3 ॥

You are the goad that disciplines the mind, which is as unruly as an elephant. You are hari (viṣṇu) in visible form for the salvation of humankind. The gods are ever extolling your divine qualities. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

कुल कुण्डलिनी घुम भञ्जक हे
हृदि ग्रन्थि विदारण कारक हे
मम मानस चण्चल रत्रदिने
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ ४ ॥

kula kuṇḍalinī ghuma bhañjaka he
hṛdi granthi vidāraṇa kāraka he
mama mānasa caṇcala ratradine
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 4 ॥

You awaken the sleeping kuṇḍalinī2 energy, and cut the knots which entangle the heart. Night and day my mind is restless and confused. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

रिपुसुधन मङ्गल नायक हे
शुख शान्ति वराभय दायक हे
त्रयताप हरे तव नाम गुणे
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ ५ ॥

ripusudhana maṅgala nāyaka he
śukha śānti varābhaya dāyaka he
trayatāpa hare tava nāma guṇe
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 5 ॥

Your glance cleanses the mind of its enemies (i.e. anger, lust, greed, egoity) and brings comfort and peace. Reciting your name relieves all suffering. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

अभिमान प्रभाव विमर्द्दक हे
गति हीन जने तूमि रक्षक हे
चित शङ्कित बञ्चित भक्ति धने
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ ६ ॥

abhimāna prabhāva vimarddaka he
gati hīna jane tūmi rakṣaka he
cita śaṅkita bañcita bhakti dhane
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 6 ॥

You destroy the impulse of arrogance and possessiveness. You protect the helpless who have no other refuge. The mind filled with fear and doubt is freed by this treasure of bhakti. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

तव नाम सदा शुभ सादक हे
पति ताधम मानव पावक हे
महिमा तव गोचर शुद्ध मने
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ ७ ॥

tava nāma sadā śubha sādaka he
pati tādhama mānava pāvaka he
mahimā tava gocara śuddha mane
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 7 ॥

The purity of your divine name, always recited by your sincere disciples, cleanses impurities out of humankind. Your true greatness can only be perceived by the mind that has been purified. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

जय सद्गुरु ईश्वर प्रापक हे
भव रोग विकार विनाशक हे
मन जेन रहे तव श्री चरणे
गुरु देव दया कर दीनजने ॥ ८ ॥

jaya sadguru īśvara prāpaka he
bhava roga vikāra vināśaka he
mana jena rahe tava śrī caraṇe
guru deva dayā kara dīnajane ॥ 8 ॥

All hail the sadguru (“true teacher” or “teacher of truth”, a Self-realized master guiding souls to liberation), who leads us to Self-realization and destroys the diseases of worldly bondage. May our minds ever rest on your holy lotus feet. O divine guru, show us your compassion.

  1. The son of the sun god Ravi is Yama, the god of death. Thus, the guru frees us from the bondage of the god of death, i.e. saṃsāra, the endless cycles of reincarnation.

  2. Kuṇḍalinī is a dormant spiritual energy (śakti) that resides at the base of the spine in mūlādhāra cakra. Awakening kuṇḍalinī śakti can give the yogi deeply profound spiritual insights and experiences. However doing so without the guidance of an enlightened guru can be very dangerous and harmful, as it will lead the yogi down a path of self-aggrandizement and misuse of their new-found spiritual power.
