Ahiṃsā Paramodharma — “Non-violence is the highest moral virtue”
Non-violence is fundamental to spirituality. From the Golden Rule to the ten commandents, “don’t hurt others” is at the heart of all religious, secular, and legal morality.
Ahiṃsā goes farther, beyond outward actions to inner intentions. It isn’t just avoiding intentional injury to others, which is easy. It is the far more difficult practice of not harming others in thought, word, or deed. True ahiṃsā means never wishing harm on another, even in the privacy of your thoughts.
अहिंसा परमो धर्मस्तथाहिंसा परो दमः ।
अहिंसा परमं दानमहिंसा परमं तपः ॥
ahiṃsā paramo dharmas
tathāhiṃsā paro damaḥ ।
ahiṃsā paramaṃ dānam
ahiṃsā paramaṃ tapaḥ ॥
Non-violence is the highest moral virtue, thus non-violence is the greatest self-restraint. Non-violence is the greatest gift one can give, and non-violence is the greatest spiritual discipline.
